We tore down a handheld fan this week. What we found was not a single lie - it was three layers of deception, stacked on top of each other.
Layer 1: The Shell
Printed right on the product housing: Battery 3.7V Li-ion 3000mAh. This is what the brand sees. This is what the Amazon listing says. This is what the customer reads before clicking Buy Now.
Layer 2: The Battery Label
We opened the device. The 18650 cell inside says 1800mAh. Already 40 percent below the claim. Most brands would stop here and think - OK, the supplier inflated the specs by 40 percent. Annoying, but manageable.
Layer 3: The Actual Test
We put the cell on a discharge tester. Real usable capacity: 800mAh.
Read that again.
The 1800mAh printed on the battery was ALSO fake.
3000 to 1800 to 800. A 73 percent gap between what was promised and what was delivered. Three layers of deception. The shell tells one story. The battery label tells another. The discharge curve tells the truth - and nobody checks until the returns start piling up.
How This Happens
Counterfeit 18650 cells are a well-documented problem in the electronics supply chain. Low-tier factories buy degraded or reject cells, re-wrap them with fake labels showing inflated capacities, and sell them at a fraction of the cost of genuine cells. The brand sourcing the product sees the spec sheet - never the actual cell. The end customer gets a device that dies in half the expected time and leaves a one-star review.
What You Can Do
- Request a production sample from your actual batch - not the pre-approved golden sample
- Open it and photograph the battery label
- Test the cell on a discharge tester. The label is not the truth. The discharge curve is.
- Compare against the supplier spec sheet. Any gap larger than 5 percent is a red flag
