What We Found Inside a $5 Dyson Copy
On paper, the factory claims:
- Motor speed: 110,000 RPM brushless
- EXW price: $5.00
- Appearance: 1:1 Dyson Supersonic clone
That price should have been the first red flag. A genuine Dyson motor assembly alone costs more than $5 to manufacture. But for brands sourcing from China, the price is often the only number they look at — and that's exactly how safety hazards end up in Amazon warehouses.
We bought one. We tore it down. Here is everything wrong with it.
Finding #1: No Ground Wire
The power cord is a standard 2-conductor cable — live and neutral. No earth wire. A missing ground is not automatically a violation: Class II appliances may legally run ungrounded when they are double-insulated and carry the Class II mark (a square inside a square). This unit shows neither — no Class II mark, and internal insulation that does not meet the double-insulation requirement (Finding #2).
Without a ground path, safety depends entirely on insulation holding up. In this dryer, the heating element regularly exceeds 200°C while the internal wiring is PVC rated for roughly 105°C (Finding #2). As that insulation degrades, the heating element casing can become energized with no path to ground — the breaker won't trip, and the user is the last line of defense.
What a compliant unit looks like: either a 3-conductor cable with a dedicated ground wire connected to the metal chassis (Class I), or a 2-conductor design with verified double insulation and the Class II mark. A Class I ground adds approximately $0.30 per unit at scale. The factory saved $0.30. The buyer inherits the liability.
Finding #2: Non-Heat-Resistant Internal Wiring
The thin red and white wires connecting the PCB to the heating element and motor are standard PVC-insulated — rated for about 105°C maximum. Inside a hair dryer, the heating core regularly exceeds 200°C during normal operation.
These wires will gradually degrade, melt, and eventually short circuit. The worst-case failure mode: the insulation melts, the conductors touch, and a short circuit ignites the PVC before the thermal fuse can react. By the time the fuse trips, you have a fire inside the housing.
What a compliant unit looks like: Silicone- or PTFE-insulated wire rated for 200°C+. Cost difference: approximately $0.15 per unit.
Finding #3: The Motor Is 50,000 RPM — Not 110,000
The factory datasheet claims a 110,000 RPM brushless motor — the same spec as a genuine Dyson V9 digital motor. We tested it. It barely reaches 50,000 RPM under no-load conditions. Under load (with the heating element active), it drops further.
The bearings are ABEC-1 grade. In continuous use, these present a high risk of premature failure within roughly 3–6 months, based on bearing grade and the absence of proper lubrication seals. A genuine high-speed motor uses ABEC-5 or ABEC-7 bearings with proper lubrication seals. The difference in motor BOM cost: approximately $3-5 per unit.
Finding #4: No Thermal Protection on the PCB
The green circular PCB has no thermal cutoff, no overcurrent protection IC, and no conformal coating. In a device that generates extreme heat and is used in bathrooms (high humidity), this is a recipe for corrosion-induced short circuits.
A proper motor control PCB for a hair dryer should include: a thermal fuse, an overcurrent detection circuit, and a conformal coating rated for humid environments. The BOM cost of adding these protections: approximately $0.80 per unit.
The Real Cost of a "$5 Hair Dryer"

A safe, functional version of this hair dryer would cost approximately $9.25 EXW — not $5.00. That extra $4.25 is not a "premium markup." It is what it costs to not burn someone's house down.
What This Means for Buyers
- Price alone is a trap. If the EXW is dramatically lower than competitors, the savings are coming from somewhere — usually safety components.
- Request a BOM breakdown before placing a PO. Most factories will provide one. If they won't, that's itself a red flag.
- Spec the components that matter. "110,000 RPM" is meaningless without bearing grade and thermal protection. Put those specs in your purchase contract.
- Audit a sample before production. Not a photo. Not a video. Buy one unit, tear it down, and verify every spec yourself. If you can't do it, hire someone who can.
