Don't Get Burned: The 18650 Battery Problem
If your product uses 18650 lithium cells, you have a problem: up to 60% of cells on the market have inflated capacity claims. We have seen cells labeled 3000mAh that tested at barely 1400mAh.
Red Flags to Watch For
- Impossible capacity claims: No 18650 cell exceeds 3600mAh. If they claim 5000mAh+, it is fake.
- No brand name: Legit cells come from Samsung, LG, Panasonic, Sony/Murata, or reputable Chinese brands (EVE, BAK, Lishen)
- Suspiciously low pricing: A genuine Samsung 35E costs $3.50-4.50 in volume. If you are paying $1.50, it is fake.
How We Verify Batteries
- Weight check: Genuine cells have consistent weight. Fakes are often lighter.
- Capacity test: Discharge at 0.2C and measure actual mAh output
- Internal resistance: Above 50mohm for a new cell is a warning sign
- Visual inspection: Check wrapper quality, QR codes, terminal flatness
Check the Continuous Discharge Rating
Capacity is only half the story. Every 18650 model has a maximum continuous discharge current — a Samsung 35E is rated 8A, a Samsung 25R 20A, and a Samsung 30Q or LG HG2 around 15–20A. A cell that meets its mAh claim but cannot hold voltage under load will cause undervoltage shutdowns, shortened runtime, or overheating in high-drain devices. Ask the supplier for the rated discharge current, and test the cell at that current — not just at 0.2C.
Protection Board

Compliance Notes
Certification requirements depend on your target market and how you ship. Three standards cover the 18650 category:
- UN 38.3 — the transport safety test for lithium cells, required for air, sea, and road shipment. It applies in every market: without a UN 38.3 test report, cells cannot be shipped by air freight.
- UL 2054 — the battery safety standard for the US market, required by most major retailers and marketplaces for battery-powered devices.
- IEC 62133 — the international battery safety standard commonly referenced in the EU (CE) and Canada for portable sealed cells.
Budget $3,000-5,000 for cell-level certification and testing before your launch.
Supplier Document Checklist
Before placing an order, request and check these documents:
- Spec sheet vs label: The rated capacity, discharge current and voltage printed on the cell must match the supplier's spec sheet — and your own test results.
- UN 38.3 test report: Required for air, sea and road shipment — verify it covers the exact model and batch you are buying, not a similar cell.
- MSDS (Safety Data Sheet): Required for shipping and customs clearance in most markets.
- Batch COA (Certificate of Analysis): Confirms the batch meets the agreed grade — request it per batch, not once.
- Traceable batch/date codes: Cells without batch codes cannot be audited or recalled later.

Sourcing 18650 cells or lithium batteries in bulk? Counterfeit and C-grade cells are the most common fraud in small appliance sourcing.
